The beauty of an ancient sequoia is undeniable and the bark is fire resistant; yet, even these venerable giants are not immune to effects of a lengthy drought and the resultant catastrophic fires in California. The relatively durable materials of granite and bronze were chosen to contrast with the ephemeral qualities of charcoal.
